Described as pleasant, moderate, sunny (300 days of sun a year!), temperate, and mild, Boulder County is classified as a semiarid environment with an average relative humidity of 37% and yearly rainfall of 21 inches. The low humidity rating adds much to the attractiveness of the area, contributing to :
• The absence of winter/summer temperature extremes. Although there are four distinct seasons, the heat and cold are not is bitter is in higher humidity climates.
• Summer temperatures drop about 20 to 30 degrees at night, eliminating that "sticky" sensation.
• A light powder snow. Snowfall in the plains in relatively sparse and usually melts by the next day. In the mountains, however, it is much heavier, making the area famous for skiing.
• A very low pollen count (one), which drastically reduces the debilitating symptoms of hay fever and asthma related conditions.
• Chinooks (literally, snow eaters) winds occasionally coming down from the mountains to the plains, lasting up to several hours and raising the temperature as mush as 30 to 40 degrees in matter of minutes.
